One of the Racket and Fitness’ Men’s 4.0 USTA Team – The Marginal Vortex (TMV), are headed to the 18 & Over Nationals in Surprise, AZ this weekend. Many members of this group have been together for a number of years and after two straight trips to Sectionals in Springfield, MA they finally made it to nationals. After going 1-1 over the first two matches, TMV put together a remarkable 5-0 victory on the final Sunday of competition to seal their spot at Nationals. Eric Berry-Sandelin earned a win at #1 singles to give TMV their first point of the day. Kazan Prindle came back after losing the first nine games of his match to win a third-set tiebreak at #2 singles. Trevor Thaxter and newcomer to the team, Rob Drouin, combined at #1 doubles for a victory as they went undefeated together in the postseason. Captain Gabe Gordon and Stephan Woods earned a win at #2 doubles, and Colin Griggs combined with Zach Disch to win at #3 doubles in a third-set tiebreak. Earlier in the weekend, Alan Jordan and Darren Alcock stepped on the court for their match at #3 doubles on Friday night after a five-hour wait. The team match was tied at two apiece, and they earned a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-4) to seal TMV’s first victory of Sectionals weekend.
In Arizona, TMV is scheduled to play teams from the South (Friday 7:30 AM), the Southwest (Friday 12:30 PM) and Northern California (Saturday 10:30 AM) as they look to reach the National Semifinals on Sunday morning.
